The 7% Factor
I was told that the American Revolution was won by the active involvement of only 7% of the population and that the French Revolution was won by only 2% of its population taking an active role. Although this needs more research on my part it points to an encouraging factor in American politics today. A recent New York Times article reported that 18% of Americans identify with the Tea Party Movement yet only 20% of them, or 4% of the American public gave money to the movement or attended a Tea Party Rally. Maybe there is something to this 7% factor.
When the 2010 elections were analyzed it became obvious that the Tea Party Movement played a significant role in turning the tide of government at both the federal and state levels. People who believe that this country has been going in the wrong direction for decades may take heart in this phenomenon especially when evidence shows that the media, the education establishment and well funded groups are working against them. Ghandi said, “Be the change you want to see.” I believe it is entirely possible that a committed minority can restore America to the great country it was when it lived according to the principles upon which it was founded.
What does this mean for men and women today who are gravely concerned about the future society their children will inherit? One need only look at who is vilified by the progressive left to understand where we are being effective. Take former Alaskan Governor, Sarah Palin and Minnesota Congresswoman, Michele Bachman for example. Why are these women so hated by the progressive left? I assert it is because they are taking the achievements the feminist movement claims as its own, the rise of women in politics to name one, then by their presence they reflect everything the feminist movement hates. These women and many others, men and women, whose principles reflect the basic beliefs of most Americans, are hated because they value life and are compassionate for those in troubled pregnancies, they value marriage and defend the institution it is. They also understand the miracle that the United States truly has been in the world. Despite the country’s mistakes and flaws, the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were built on fundamental truths about the Creator and His creation. This too is a principle the progressive left loathes but will not admit. The bottom line is that these rising stars in politics give voice to what most Americans believe and thus they must be destroyed by the left.
Feminism is just one component of the progressive left. Let’s look at who else the left vilifies for a glimpse into what they are truly afraid of. A few examples that come to mind are Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, why? Could it be because they are shedding the light of truth on the hidden agendas and back room activities of the left? This “new media” is accomplishing what conservatives in government could not because their message was ignored and twisted by the main news media of the day. Up until the wide spread availability of the internet and talk radio they were able to control the message and skew the image of the conservative movement.
We have entered a new era with these technologies making it much easier for Americans to get another viewpoint and an ability to see people live and in person thus making up their own minds. At no other time in history has the 7% Factor been more potentially powerful than today. We should be encouraged by this! Let us use the means available to us to have a true national conversation on the issues that face America. If just 7% of the pro life movement would get actively involved and passionately engaged in talking and educating the people in their lives, then we will finally, with God’s help, unite the voice of the majority of Americans in their shared belief and rid this country of the cancerous growths eating away at our national soul.
A 2009 Gallop poll stated that 51% of Americans are pro life. John McCain received approximately 60 million votes in 2008. Even if we only applied the 51% pro life to that number that would be 30.06 million people are pro life. If only 7% of that number were passionately, actively involved that would be 2.1 million. Do we have 2.1 million pro life activists right now? What could we do with that number of pro lifers showing up to work for the cause? It is happening with the Tea Party and it can happen with the pro life movement as well!
Although a large portion of the American public is confused and undereducated who’s to say that wasn’t the case in colonial America as well? Isn’t it encouraging knowing that the sleeping giant (Americans) will wake up if just 7% of us to who are awake get involved? Take heart! We are on the right side of history and truth. Four percent of the Tea Party contributed to a vast change in the people who now hold office. What can we accomplish in 2012 if we increase that to 7 percent?
